4Small size, but stands out in a crowded sea of DJ units  Dec 16, 2004 By Jason Spencer "simdjs.com"
I have been spinning "CD" for nearly 10 years now, and I must say that this unit stands out over the competition. For years, I've been sold on Pioneer, emerging with the original 500-G & 500-II, then the 700s, 100s, the 1000s, and even some stint on the 3000 dual unit. This one stands out over all of them, and here's why:

MP3 Playback is amazing on here, and you can scratch it too. You can have files 8 folders deep, with 255 tracks each. Combine that with the ability to "quick-mix" into another track on the disc, and you can be unstoppable, even with one CD. Plus you get full ID support, including v2.4.

The hot starts can be located anywhere on the disc, in addition to your regular cue. So you can preset a hard transition into two other tracks on the disc, and still be in a third track from the start.

It will store presets for up to 1000 tracks, including the on/off status of nearly every button on the machine, plus your two hot starts of the track. The only thing it doesn't store is the actually pitch up/down (for obvious reasons).

Digital outputs work with ALL features on, at a steady 44.1k.

This unit only gets four stars for a few reasons. The main reason, scratching accuracy can be tricky at first, but you improve over time. The platter does not move, and the only real cue tip you have is watching the seconds and frames.

Another downer is that the BPM counter seems to be off, but maybe I'm missing a feature - there are three settings to the counter (Auto/Tap/Manual Entry). However, once you find the BPM, it does change with the pitch slider, a plus but common these days.

Lastly, I haven't quite figured out how to change the slipmat/platter that ships with the unit. It looks like a very small a-wrench should work, but the manual and Denon website doesn't tell you - just the video on their site says it can be done. The reason to change it? All the photos show it as black, when it's really a shiny silver CD, which can REALLY glare when dance lighting is around you, or even overhead lighting.

Was it worth the investment? So far, yeah - I recommend these to anyone looking for a small package (same height/width of a Pioneer 100s, but half as long) with a ton of "useful" features.

4Excellent Features Horrific Scratching  Feb 20, 2007 By Alexis Hernandez "spade"
Full of features is what I love most about this product. However, what I don't like is the quality of the scratch disk. I am not a professional DJ, but I am sure that if a song is played and scratched, it should continue to play after the scratch. This unit's scratch operation is controlled by weight rather than a spinning disk (scratch disk does not spin); therefore, when releasing fingers from the scratch disk the weight provided may not always lift, causing the track to remain paused even when the play has not been paused manually. This could be a problem when playing at parties. I kind of figured out how to limit this problem by simply unscrewing the plate with a 1.27mm hex key and tightening the plate at the tip of the spindle. It helped to provide less weight when fingers are released. Once the scratch flaw is controlled, this product would receive five stars because of its amazing features, but if the scratch flaw cannot be fixed, it can piss you off. If you're really serious about DJing and adding scratching to your repertoire, add about $300 more and get the DN-S3500s (the scratch disk spins on the S3500s and the features are even better). The S1000s would be great to start with and grow from.

5The DN S1000 works for me!  Aug 07, 2010 By NJ DJ
The DN S1000 is a great product! I currently own one and was looking for one that was used. I was able to find a used DN S1000 at a great price and in excellent condition!!!!! It really helps that the previous owner, who is also a DJ, took very good care of it!!! The DN S1000 is easy to use and doesn't take up a lot of space. I now have matching cd DJ players to go along with my Technics 1200's. I'm very happy with my DN S1000!

4Finally!!!  Apr 10, 2009 By Mark Robinson "Mark D. Robinson"
Been spinning for a minute and this really makes the party happen! Economical enough for anyone to afford, yet has most of the features the the expensive models have. Can't say enough about the ease with which one can interchange cds on the fly. I use this in conjunction with 2 turntables and my ipod mixer for a full funtioning "work station". What a blessing....thanx!
