2Very strict compatibilty requirements.  Oct 23, 2006 By Carmen Gilman "Yohan VanderShmoot"
First of all, if you have any new intel macs Pro Tools will not install. Only Mac OS X version 10.4.7 and lower are compatible. There are many different small print requirement issues with Pro Tools LE. Read every last requirement on the Digidesign support pages before buying this. Digidesign really needs to be better with support for problems.

2compatibility  Aug 29, 2006 By Dave
I was very excited when i received the mbox 2 because i was confident that it was good software. I did my homework like a good little boy before laying my money down to make sure my system wouldn't have any problems. I looked all over - except the digidesign tech support page. I figured samash's ad, among others I checked, would have told me enough. None of the places I checked, and i checked quite a few, mentioned anything about that issue. Turns out, the only thing wrong with my system was its chipset. It didn't have a set that was supported. All of the other specs and requirements on my computer were fine. In fact for everything else, i had more than the minimum. They said the only way to correct the issue is to replace the motherboard. I called a manager at samash and he said he's never heard of that kind of problem ever happening. Digidesign tech said they get lots of calls and complaints about it. Evidently digidesign doesn't make too much effort in communicating all of the common problems with software to thier distributors. So...digidesign got my money but did i get thier product? No, and they don't accept returns either. I was very disappointed. Make positively sure your system is compatible by checking the digidesign tech support page before you risk buying an expensive and useless product. I gave it 2 stars because I fell in love with the free version of protools and I'm sure the interface and software for the mbox 2 are great...i just can't use them and if it weren't for ebay, I'd be stuck with a lot of lost money.

4Like it... but  Jan 31, 2008 By Gloria Martinez Villamarin
I bought it because I had been working on them in my classes. It works fine an everything. The problem I see is the strict requirements. It works with Mac OS 10.4, but now they launched OS X Leopard, so I can't upgrade.
The same happens with windows. I was thinking of buying a new laptop, but now they all come with Vista, and the Mbox is compatible only with XP.
If you want some advice, save a little bit more and buy a MOTU Ultralite.
It doesn't have that much requirements and Sonar works as good as Protools.

5ProTools quality... on the go.  Jun 02, 2006 By JohnyC "www.myspace.com/JohnyC"
I have been a ProTools user for 8 years now. I just recently picked up the MBox 2 to mix and master recordings I do in a pro studio, at home. Honestly, if you buy this just to use the ProTools software (which is included unlike 99% of other interfaces) you are still getting your money's worth. It has decent sounding pre's for your every day tasks and recordings. It has decent AD/DA converters that are more than adequate for on the go recording. For $450, you get the essence of ProTools in a small, very POWERFULL package. Like the man said below, if you don't know your audio, start elsewhere and work your way up. As for Digidesign customer service, they are some of the best in the business. They understand that most of the people using their hardware/software are Pro users where time is money. I have owned a 002 and MBox1 in the past 8 years and the one time my 002 went down, they overnighted me a new unit where I put my busted 002 in the box and kept the fresh new one. Digidesign is pro and ProTools is commonplace in the industry. If your looking for a small, affordable, and very powerful package the MBox is what you need. Pro or not.

3A mixed bag  Sep 20, 2009 By AA
I find the MBox2 to be a real mixed bag, but really the best affordable interface for people on Windows or running ProTools on Macs.

There are 2 major software options for professional audio editing (some would dispute this, but these are the industry standards, by and large): ProTools and Logic. Having worked with both, I think Logic is the far superior program, but unfortunately, it doesn't work on PCs, so I use ProTools LE through an MBox2 on my PC.

PROs
-The quality is really excellent. It's a great ADC/DAC (Analog-to-Digital or Digital-to-Analog Converter) when it comes to actual sound quality. Mics are clean and output to the speakers is virtually free of any hiss or background noise. It's really fantastic! (Less so when it goes through a mixer, in my experience, so hook directly into your monitors if you get a hiss.
-Good preamps and easy controls. I'd prefer slide controls rather to knobs, personally, but Digidesign reserves those for the next model up, the far more expensive Digi 008.

CONs
-Customer service from Digidesign is awful! So, good luck if you have any issues.
-There are only 2 inputs. They advertise 4, but that's deceptive language. There are 2 mono analog inputs (mics, instruments, etc.). The other 2 are from a single stereo S/PDIF input, but that's a digital input, which means you can't plug in mics, instruments, etc., unless they go through a separate ADC (analog-to-digital converter) before plugging in to the MBox2. I use an Alesis io|26 to allow for additional inputs into my MBox2, but this is itself a limited solution, because that means you can't mix the levels of the Alesis inputs separately in the ProTools software; you can only change the levels of the overall input, which must be premixed in real time from the ADC (in my case, the Alesis io|26).
-The software is buggy, difficult to install, and stops playing, recording, or bouncing (which can only be done in real time!) frequently. You pretty much have to shut down almost everything on your computer, including bluetooth, wifi, etc., to have any chance of it running smoothly.
-Other programs aren't generally compatible with the MBox 2. Try playing to your monitors from iTunes, for instance, and you'll get a mess of distorted, choppy sounds. The exception seems to be Windows Media Player, which is compatible, in my experience.

It's worth mentioning that others may not have the same problems as I've had. But it seems everyone has problems with ProTools and the Digi problems. As you get into the better quality products (HD, etc.), these substantially lessen, but the investment is huge! If you're on a MAC, I'd recommend you go with Logic and pick whatever ADC/DAC you'd like. It's a pity that such a great sounding converter as the MBox2 is tied to such terrible software and such a delinquent company.
