Solid & Configurable May 11, 2012

This is the first flight case I have ever had to purchase and I opted for the Odyssey FZ12MIX based upon the opinions of others. I have, thus far, not been disappointed! It's larger than I thought it would be and is fairly heavy, but quite sturdy. It comes with inserts for various 12" mixers. In my case, my Xone:42 fits quite well though I did have to trim some of the inserts to allow airflow to the side vents.
Of note, the description or pictures do not make it very clear, but FZ12MIX does come with foam wedges to prop the mixer up if you prefer it at an angle. My Xone tends to get pretty warm so that is the configuration I have used to this point to allow a bit more airflow over the front vents. It works ok, but I don't like leaving the mixer angled when packing things up (I haven't even tried putting the top of the case on with this config) so I end up spending some time unpacking and repacking. The angled setup only makes a marginal difference and I will likely try the mixer flat to see if heat is an issue or not.
This, plus the fact that the front slide out comes off a bit too easily is the only reason I opted to give it 4 stars, and I'm not sure either is truly fair. I think 4.5 or even 4.75 is a bit more realistic :)
Beyond that, I've been incredibly happy with it. To be fair, I have yet to actually fly with it, but will do so in a few weeks. It has been suggested that I should get some velcro for the bottom of my mixer to try to keep it affixed to the case. That way the mixer won't be resting on its face if the case ends up face-down in the belly of a plane. Seems like a good idea to me. Most of the time, though, I'll be using it as a way to store my expensive mixer and tote it around town when I need to.
