| | Description | The QSC GX5 Stereo Power Amplifier is ideal for professional entertainers who require maximum performance and portability on a limited budget. QSC designers, headed by Pat Quilter, have optimized output and appearance of the rackmountable GX5 while reducing raw material cost and weight. The GX5 power amplifier provides full performance for 500 watt (Program) speakers and supplies maximum possible power to 4 ohm and 8 ohm loads. Owners of popular 4 ohm loudspeakers (dual-woofer, two-way models and many subwoofers) will find the 700 watt (4 ohm) power of the GX5 an ideal match. The GX5 power amp uses a Class H system, based on key elements of the PLX Series, almost doubling power in the same size and weight. QSC design expertise allows the output devices to shift from low-power to high-power rails in less than a millionth of a second, ensuring that the output power is always right where it needs to be without excess loss. | |

Clean quiet power Jan 30, 2009
By J. Miller
"StudioMaster"
I bought the QSC GX5 stereo amplifier for use in my band's practice studio. We previously used a Mackie mixer/amp setup and we recently bought an Allen & Heath mixer along with the QSC Amp. We've gone from a little noisy system to an absolutely silent (no hiss, no noise) system even when turned all the way up. It's nice! We A/B'd the amps and while the Mackie is rated to have more power, the QSC is clearly punchier and so much cleaner. I can't say enough about how nice this amp is. I've owned Crown, Crest and Yamaha amps as well and none of them were cleaner than this one.
As for durability, it's still new BUT QSC is offering a 6 year warranty for free on this model (until March 09) so I can't imagine they would do this if these amps were a service problem.
Oh and it looks great in my rack. I read somewhere that the amp is noisy when the cooling fans get going. Knowing this, I cranked the amp full and ran a punchy CD through the mixer full blast (no distortion!) and waited while the amp warmed up. After it reached operating temperature, the fan(s) indeed came on but by no means were they "loud." If I had this amp in a recording studio, I would have the amp in a soundproof room or enclosure as I suppose the fan could be audible during very quiet recording sessions. On the other hand, it is reassuring that I know the fans are indeed working, keeping the rails cool. For live sound, it just isn't a real issue.
Now I'm considering getting another QSC for a monitor amp. I heartily recommend this amplifier.

Easiest buying decision I have ever made Mar 26, 2012
By Alberto Getting this amplifier was the easiest buying decision I have ever made.
Like most of my technological and sound equipment, I bought this amplifier online basing my decision upon users' reviews. That was about two and a half years ago. There were enough reviews at the time to have a good idea about what to expect from this amplifier. Contrary to most items for which you can find online reviews, the QSC GX5 reviews were all about satisfied customers. There was not a single negative or neutral review about this item. That made the decision about which amplifier to get, very easy. The QSC GX5 was the way to go and it has performed just as it was expected, ever since I got it.
This amplifier produces a very clean and pleasant sound through two EV Eliminator I speakers (350W continuous, 700W program, 1400W peak for each speaker) coming from a PEAVEY PV14 mixer and an ART EQ-355 equalizer. I can not compare it to other options, because I have not had any experience with other amplifiers in this class before. However, my ear is very clinical and it is not hard for me to identify sound flaws with any given source, such as unbalanced sound or unwanted noise traits (noise floor) such as hisses, hums and the like sound impurities. There is no such a thing as a zero unwanted noise setup. However, when the noise floor is so low that noise impurities are hard to notice when the system is idle (nothing is being played through it), then you can say that you have a quiet setup. That is the case with the QSC GX5. With this setup, I have to stand very close to the speakers to be able to hear something (noise floor), when the system is idle. That not only speaks good about this amplifier, but also about the mixer and the equalizer models mentioned here.
Update on 2012-Apr-23: I forgot to say that now there is a new model in the QSC GX series amplifiers (GX3, GX5, GX7). It is the GX7 which is more powerful than the GX5 (700 vs 500 watts per channel at 8 ohm load). Despite being more powerful, it is lighter in weight. This would make it an interesting choice in a mobile setup where carrying the amplifier by hand is a common task.
Something else that I forgot to say is that over time, there will be dust accumulation on the cooling fans. As this happens, the fans will become noisier. If they become quite noisy before the 6 year warranty expires, you would face the dilemma of opening the amplifier and cleaning the fans, thus making the warranty void versus keeping the warranty with noisy cooling fans. I am overseas, so for heavy devices such as this one, warranties are useless because of the high cost of shipping just to get the warranty service. So, this is not an issue for me. If it was, I would not hesitate to open the amp and clean the fans if they got very noisy.
Solid Feb 19, 2012
By Thorn I usually don't leave reviews but if your thinking about dropping 400 dollars every bit of info helps....so. Very solid and compact amp. I bought the seismic 15inch loud speakers that every review was talking good about. Hooked up the amp and everything sounds great. You can have the amp cranked and not have distortion, just a tight, clean sound. Had my brother check it out (always willing to make me look like an idiot) and he was even amazed by the setup. When I was in school about 8 years ago we helped tear down the stage in our gymnasium. They were going to throw away some older qsc amps so i quickly nabbed them and found out about the company's quality. Another selling point was the free 6 year warranty. I find that amazing in the audio industry. Very happy with my investment. I might buy the g7 down the road.
A durable, good sounding pro amp Nov 02, 2011
By Eli Lilly This amp is great sounding and is a real workhorse. I've had mine for a couple of years now and we run it in the Florida heat, for many hours straight, and even sometimes in the rain. We've never had a problem. It's a very well-thought out amp - for inputs it accepts both RCA and 1/4", which is rare. It has speakon outputs and also supports 1/4" out and banana plug out, which is rare. It has an internal limiter and also automatically turns itself down if it starts to overheat. It's really a set-it-and-forget-it piece of equipment.
QSC amps are highly recommended by most DJ's Jul 25, 2011
By C. Keller I've got a little mobile DJ rig, and needed a new amp to power my JBL EON 1500 speakers. After doing a lot of research and reading through a couple of DJ forums, QSC amps were highly recommended by most DJ's...for quality and reliability. I also learned that there is a lot of junk out there, and quality equipment isn't cheap. It was nice to see that I could get a quality amp that fit my specs as well as my budget.
One of the nice features is the connectivity options. Inputs: RCA, 1/4", and XLR. Outputs: binding post, banana plugs, 1/4", and speakon. No need for gender changers or adapters, all the most common connector types are built right in.
I bought this amp based on the rule of thumb that the amp should be 1.5 to 2 times the speakers RMS rating. As it turns out, I only have to turn this GX5 up about 2 to 3 clicks at the small parties I play at. I probably could have got by just fine with the GX3, but it's nice to know I've got the extra power if I ever need it.
