5A Splendid CD Player  Feb 12, 2011 By Lawrence H. Bulk "Lawrence H. Bulk"
I received my Stanton S252 DJ Table-Top CD Player with Fader Start and Digital Outputs two days ago (from Parts Express) and I am completely satisfied with it.

Single-disc CD players are an "endangered species" nowadays and solid, well-built ones are very difficult to find. This unit can be used in a home system OR it can be used as a transportable CD player, which is my intention.

It is as simple to use as is possible; if you are a DJ, it has just about all the facilities you would require and, if you are just a plain listener (that's me), it is VERY easy to master, even without reading any instructions.

There was only one setting which initially confused me: when turning on the player, its default is to play only one track. (When the music stopped after the first track, I thought something was wrong with the player!) But a quick look at the VERY large and VERY well-labeled controls led me to see a CTN/SGL button; obviously this stands for continuous and single. A quick press of the button sets the player to play continuously (which is what I want).

Not being a disc jockey means that there are many features available on this player which I will never use. But at its low price and its obvious superb construction, that doesn't matter (at least to me).

It has just about any output you would want - stereo analog (RCA-type jacks), coaxial digital, AND a 3.5 mm headphone output. This headphone output has no volume control but, when I tried the player with my headphones, the volume was just right. (My headphones are of 32-Ohm impedance.)

As the headphone jack's volume is not adjustable, it functions more like a line output jack (and should probably be labeled as such).

You can attach a pair of amplified computer speakers to this headphone output and you would then have a complete small portable sound system. I have done just that, attaching my Logitech Compact Speaker System Z320 for Notebooks to it; the sound was exemplary. (I have not, as yet, attached this player to any of my home stereo systems, but I'm certain that its performance in that type of setting would not be lacking. I own one system in which the amplifier has digital inputs; some day, when inertia relaxes its grip on me, I'd like to try this player with that amplifier to see how it performs.)

I mentioned above that the controls are large and very well labeled. Opening the top allows one to easily place the CD into the well (you do not have to fiddle with placement - it just drops right in). Yes, this player is a top-loader; I have always preferred this type as, if something happens to the power (or to the player itself), you can easily retrieve your CD. Once you have started playing a disc, you can play with the controls to see what they do. That should take you less than five minutes! Then you'll know your player perfectly.

There is even an adjustable pitch control for those who require it and its parameters are easily changed from the default +/- 8% to +/- 12% or 16%.

This player is larger than one of those portable CD players sold at Best Buy and Radio Shack (and even here on Amazon) but I am certain that this one will last MUCH longer than any of those "cheapies." Believe me, from unfortunate first-hand experience with several of these players, I know! (If you get a year or two out of one of those $20.00-$40.00 portables, you're doing well.)

I should also mention that this player has a built-in power supply. That's certainly a rarity these days! Its AC power cord is detachable and is polarized (on both ends), thereby being a standard type; a replacement cord, if one were ever necessary, can be obtained from any local electrical shop. No cheap design necessitating a "wall-wart" power supply here!

In conclusion, I'll say that it is very well-made, very well-designed, easy to use, and offers a complete array of connections. Plus it is easily transportable, and - most important - the sound quality it produces is absolutely first-rate.

I like it very much!

I have nothing more to say except that, if you are in the market for a single-disc CD player, I STRONGLY recommend that you consider this one.

Update: February 16, 2011

I refer you to my review of the Stanton S.300 Tabletop CD Player with MP3 Compatibility if you are interested in MP3 disc playback capability in addition to CD playback. The S.300 is much more costly than this S.252 so, if MP3 playback is of no concern to you, this S.252 is all you need. Otherwise, both are essentially the same. I like them both and I'm glad I bought both.

5Better than I expected  Jan 10, 2011 By W. Peel "WickedWillie"
I was looking for a "playback only" CD player for my church to use for accompaniment CDs and music CDs. After a disappointing experience with a 5 disc carousel unit from Sherwood, I happened upon this unit. The fact that it was advertised as a "DJ" unit, as well as the list of features (especially the instant start and cue features) swayed me to try the unit. As a plus, it was less expensive and less complex than the Sherwood unit and it had a smaller footprint...all of that was good.

The unit arrived faster than promised and in good shape. (The Sherwood unit wouldn't operate right out of the box.) It was simplicity personified...set up was easy and it worked perfectly right out of the box. I really didn't even need to read the instructions...though I did. (I've been employed in the audiovisual field for over 20 years, so that might have given me a bit of an "edge.")

This unit fulfills its intended uses perfectly. Controls are simple and well placed. The cue and instant start functions work as described. I haven't used the unit long enough to address its durability...but the fact that it's advertised as being a DJ unit makes me think that it will stand up to a fair amount of use/abuse.
